Matthew Tyrie jailed over £1m Hillsborough cannabis haul

A man caught with £1m worth of cannabis has been given a six-year sentence.

Fifty-year-old Matthew Tyrie, from Knockleigh Walk in Greenisland, will spend three years in prison and three years on bail.

Tyrie was caught with 210kgs of cannabis resin when police stopped a car outside Hillsborough, County Down, in January of last year.

It was the biggest seizure of cannabis resin in Northern Ireland for five years.

Detectives believe Tyrie was an active member of an organised crime group.

Officers stopped the car he was in heading south on the A1 Belfast to Newry carriageway at the Hillsborough Road roundabout.
