Hoax bomb alert in Broadlands Gardens, Carrickfergus

An overnight bomb alert in Carrickfergus, County Antrim, has been declared an elaborate hoax.

It began shortly before 01:45 GMT when a suspicious object was found at the rear of a house in Broadlands Gardens.

Two homes were evacuated while Army bomb disposal officers examined the object. The residents were allowed to return to their homes at 06:45 GMT.

It was the third security alert in the same housing estate in less than a month.

'Menacing behaviour'

Carrickfergus councillor Gavin Norris said: "I totally condemn the actions of those who have yet again caused disruption to residents living in the Broadlands Gardens area.

"It is completely unacceptable that two families were forced from their homes in the middle of the night due to the disgraceful and menacing behaviour of those behind this hoax device.

"Concern is growing as Broadlands Gardens continues to be singled out and I would urge anyone with any information to contact the PSNI as soon as possible," the Alliance representative said.

"Residents just want to get on with their lives in peace," Mr Norris added.

Police have appealed to anyone who saw anything suspicious in the Broadlands Gardens area on Sunday morning to contact them.
