Thieves cut down electricity poles in Newtownabbey

Thieves who cut down electricity poles to steal cables risked electrocuting themselves and injuring passers-by, police have warned.

A number of electricity poles were cut down at Antrim Road in Newtownabbey early on Tuesday.

The thieves made off with about 1,400 metres of overhead conductor.

Police said some households were left without electricity while repairs were carried out, and they have appealed for information.

"There is a strong risk of serious injury to those responsible for cutting down the poles, and this extends also to passers-by and livestock," said Neighbourhood Policing Inspector Alan McKeown.
