Man, 32, shot in both legs in Waterside area of Derry
A man who was injured in a gun attack in Londonderry was "shot by appointment", a DUP MLA has said.
The 32-year-old was shot in both legs at the mainly loyalist Lincoln Courts area of the Waterside at about 23:30 BST on Tuesday.
He has undergone emergency surgery for his injuries, which are not thought to be life-threatening. Police have appealed for information.
William Hay said the man was ordered to go to a playpark before being shot.
"It almost mirrors what dissident republicans have been doing on the Cityside, when young people are almost being ordered to come to a particular area where the shooting takes place," said the DUP assembly member.
"This is the first time that we've had an incident of this nature in the Waterside area."
Ch Insp Jon Burrows said it was a "horrific attack".
"It was barbaric, it sends out all the wrong signals, it has brought great injury to the victim and it is important that we track down those responsible and bring them to justice," he said.
