UTV records rise in pre-tax profits

An improving economy has helped Ulster Television record a 62% rise in pre-tax profit for the first half of 2014.

An advertising boost thanks to the World Cup also contributed to the £10m profit.

The company also owns radio station TalkSport and will soon launch UTV Ireland.

John McCann, group chief executive of UTV Media, said improving economic conditions in the UK and Ireland "bode well" for the new channel's launch.

UTV Ireland is expected to make a first year loss of between £2m and £3m.

The company forecast that profitability is likely in the second half of 2015.
