Garvagh burglary: Armed gang rob elderly couple

A gang of five masked men, armed with iron bars and screwdrivers, have robbed an elderly couple in their home in Garvagh, County Londonderry.

The gang entered the couple's house in the Lyttlesdale area of the village on Tuesday evening and claimed to be from a paramilitary organisation.

They ransacked the house and stole cash.

Det Ch Insp Catherine Magee said although the couple were not physically harmed, they were left "badly shaken".

'Disgusting'

East Derry MLA John Dallat described it as a "horrific attack".

"While the couple was not physically harmed, this awful ordeal must have been absolutely horrific for them," he said.

"Your home is supposed to be the one place you feel completely safe, but for this couple, that security has been snatched by cowards masquerading under a paramilitary guise who are fit only to prey on elderly, defenceless people.

"What has happened is disgusting, and I urge anyone who knows anything about this despicable attack to contact police."

Police have also appealed for anyone with information or who noticed any suspicious activity in the area to contact them.
