Newtownards police warn of health centre phone scam

Police in County Down have warned people of a phone scam in which callers claim to be from a health centre.

Police said they had received at least seven reports from residents across the Ards peninsula.

In a post on social media, officers in Newtownards said the caller asks "a number of medical questions before suggesting a course of medication".

They then ask for credit card details to purchase it.

The post added: "On some occasions, the person also offered to come to the person's home for further consultation."

Police said that GP practices would not try to contact patients in this way and do not sell medication.

They added that anyone who receives a call of this kind should report it to police.
