Newtownabbey Linfield supporters club bookkeeper admits fraud

The bookkeeper of Newtownabbey Linfield supporters club has admitted moving tens of thousands of pounds from the club's accounts into his own.

Perry Clements, 37, of Green End, Newtownabbey, County Antrim, had earlier pleaded not guilty to a single charge of fraud by abuse of position.

His barrister said there had been a dispute about the amount involved and asked that Clements be re-arraigned.

When the charge was put to him again, Clements replied "guilty".

He was accused of transferring more than £38,000 from the club's accounts into his own bank account between 13 October 2009 and 25 March, 2011.

The accused was charged with transferring a total amount of £42,703.04, which was £38,067 more than the £4,636.04 to which he was entitled.

When the verdict was returned, the prosecutor said the amount in question had been reduced to around £32,000. He said that Clements had already paid back £20,000.

Sentencing was adjourned to allow for the preparation of pre-sentence reports, and Clements was ordered to return to court on 14 November.
