A security alert in Lurgan, that started after the discovery of a suspicious package in a fast food restaurant, has been declared a hoax.

The alert at the premises on Union Street in the County Armagh town began at about 22:30 GMT on Thursday. It ended about two hours later.

Army bomb experts were sent to the scene and some homes were evacuated.

A controlled explosion was carried out and the object was later removed for examination.

DUP MLA Stephen Moutray said he hoped it was "an isolated event that would not lead to a pattern".

"Considerable disruption has been caused to families living in the vicinity," he added.
