Londonderry: Serious assault on 15-year-old girl

A 15-year-old girl has been seriously assaulted in Londonderry.

The teenager was attacked by a man whom she did not know on Racecourse Road early on Saturday morning.

The assault took place sometime between 01:30 GMT and 03:00 GMT. The man was described as being approximately 20-21 years old and had a single upper tooth.

Police have appealed to anyone who was in the area overnight to contact them, particularly young people who were near a tunnel off the road.

'Gravely concerned'

The suspect spoke with a Derry accent and was wearing a red hooded top with white stripes.

The girl received medical treatment after the assault.

Derry City councillor Angela Dobbins said she was "gravely concerned about this attack on somebody so young".

"It highlights the need for community safety wardens in that area, who cannot do their duties because of death threats issued during the week," the SDLP representative added.

"I would ask anyone with any information to contact either their local councillor or the PSNI."
