A Sinn Féin councillor is among five people arrested by police investigating paramilitary activity in County Londonderry.

Tony McCaul, 62, was elected to the shadow Causeway Coast and Glens Council earlier this year.

He was detained along with a man aged 31 and two men in their 50s at houses in the Dungiven area on Thursday morning.

Another man, also 31, was later arrested by police in County Antrim.

Detectives also carried out a series of searches during the operation.

They said they were investigating paramilitary activity, including shootings and threats, predominantly over the past four years.

The men have been taken to Antrim police station for questioning.
