Canal Street, Newry: Man remanded over 'serious' assault

A 21-year-old man arrested in connection with a serious assault in Newry, County Down, has been remanded in custody.

Police said an altercation took place between several men at about 02:30 GMT on New Year's Day in Canal Street.

A 28-year-old man suffered a broken nose, fractures to his eye socket and jaw and bruising to his face and body.

The 21-year-old appeared in court on Friday charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Police have appealed for information about the attack.
