Crisis fund for migrants to Northern Ireland welcomed

The Law Centre NI has welcomed the setting up by the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister of a crisis fund for destitute asylum seekers and migrants.

The Red Cross will deliver the service.

The Law Centre said it was a forward-thinking move and Stormont was to be congratulated.

The Law Centre's Glen Jordan said they had to send migrants to local charities so they could feed their children while helping them access benefits.

"We also have first-hand experience of people left destitute when their claim for asylum was refused and they could not be sent back to their own country," he said.

"The Law Centre has been advocating for this fund, which provides help at crucial times of need in people's lives, and we are delighted with this decision."

The fund was launched on Wednesday.
