A man has been remanded in custody after a prison officer and hospital worker were injured in an incident at Londonderry's Altnagelvin Hospital.

Police were called to the A&E department of the hospital at about 17:40 GMT on Friday.

It followed reports a prisoner who was receiving treatment had assaulted prison and hospital staff.

The prison officer suffered a suspected broken arm and a hospital staff member a head injury.

Police said a 35-year-old man was charged with assault causing actual bodily harm, attempting to escape from legal custody, criminal damage, disorderly behaviour, gbh with intent, possession of an offensive weapon and making threats to kill.

He appeared in court on Saturday and was remanded in custody.
