A man attempted to grab a teenage girl and pull her into his car as she walked through Ballycastle, County Antrim, police have said.

The incident happened at about 20:15 GMT on Tuesday night, but details have only just been released.

The 16-year-old girl was walking along Ramoan Road when the man, aged about 28 to 30, drew up behind her in his car and shouted obscene comments at her.

She escaped and police are treating the incident as a "suspicious approach".

A PSNI spokeswoman said the driver followed the girl to Leyland Road where he turned the engine off and "lunged across the passenger seat and attempted to grab her through the open passenger door".

The suspect, who left the area, was described as thin with a shaved head and a "broad country accent".

He was driving a dull blue car that had with some rust on it.
