An elderly woman has been injured during an attempted hijacking in west Belfast.

She was approached by a man, who tried to take her keys, in Cavendish Square at about 16:30 BST on Wednesday.

He left the scene empty-handed, but the victim was badly bruised and shaken by the attack.

Later, a man attempted to hijack a van on the Falls Road in the city. After struggling with the driver, he left the scene and was hit by a passing car.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested.

Const Kieran Murray appealed to anyone who was in Cavendish Square or on the Falls Road and who witnessed either incident to contact police in Musgrave on 101.

He said: "I would also ask the driver of the white car that reportedly struck the male as he left the scene of the incident to contact officers to tell us what they saw."
