A woman has been seriously injured in an incident involving cattle on an island in Lower Lough Erne, County Fermanagh.

An Irish Coastguard helicopter from County Sligo attended the incident at Devenish Island last Sunday.

The Enniskillen lifeboat responded to a call for assistance, said the RNLI's Stephen Ingram.

The woman was assessed by paramedics and taken to the South West Acute hospital in Enniskillen.

She is believed to have been walking her dog on Devenish when they were attacked by cattle.

The family pet was taken to a vet but died of its injuries.

A relative of the woman said she had later undergone surgery on her colon and back.

"It was deemed that Rescue 118, Sligo's Coastguard helicopter, was needed to transport the lady," said Mr Ingram.

"From what we've heard she was transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital (in Belfast)."
