A man has been charged with an animal cruelty offence after a pup was killed with a hammer in County Armagh.

The 23-year-old is due to appear at Craigavon Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

A 16-year-old, also arrested in connection with the incident which police believe happened during a party in Lurgan, has been released on bail.

Police were made aware of the attack on Sparky, a terrier breed, on Monday and the men were arrested on Tuesday.

The incident happened at a flat in Ailsbury Park on Saturday.

Ch Insp Jon Burrows said: "We believe that a puppy was savagely attacked with a hammer, put in a microwave and then left in a wheelie bin on that evening."

He appealed for anyone at the party to come forward and speak to the police.
