Soldier 'hit man with golf club' at Derry house party

A 21-year-old soldier serving in the Irish army has appeared at Londonderry Magistrates Court charged with assaulting a man with a golf club.

Garbhan Timoney, from Old School Lane, is charged with causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent.

The attack is alleged to have happened at a house party in the Waterside in 2009.

The 20-year-old victim sustained a suspected fractured jaw and required 14 stitches.

The defendant was released and will appear in court again in September.
