Claudy man jailed after he used 'car as a weapon'
A 46-year-old Claudy man has been jailed for three months after he tried to "ram his way through" a police checkpoint.
Londonderry Magistrates Court was told that Noel Hutchinson, from De Glin Park, had tried to escape police in Clooney Terrace in August 2009.
He was charged with a number of offences including dangerous driving and driving with excess alcohol.
Deputy District Judge Conway said it was "disgraceful driving."
He was also charged with failing to report an accident and failing to remain at the scene.
A defence barrister said Hutchinson had drink problems but since the incident had tried to stay off it.
He asked the court to consider community service to allow Hutchinson "to atone to society for his actions."
However, Judge Conway said the offences went far beyond community service.
The defendant was also disqualified from driving for five years and fined a total of £250.
