Gang attacks Londonderry election canvassers

A team of canvassers from the People Before Profit Alliance Party has been attacked in Londonderry.

The group, which included a number of candidates, were in Nelson Drive in the Waterside area when they were approached by a group of men.

One of the canvassers had to receive hospital treatment following the attack.

Police said the incident was being treated as sectarian. They have appealed for information.

One of the candidates, Davy McAuley, explained what happened.

"A group of men approached us shouting sectarian abuse. The next thing there were paving stones coming flying at us.

"We tried to move away from them, and one of our group turned around to confront them, to say: 'What are you doing?'" he said.

"He was punched in the face and, unfortunately, had to get three stitches in hospital."
