Assaulted mother hours after jail release, court hears

A 35-year-old man was arrested for assaulting his mother hours after he was released from prison, Londonderry Magistrates court has been told.

Terence Edward Doherty, from Chamberlain Street, left jail on Friday after serving five months for assault.

He was arrested that evening and charged with assaulting another woman and a man, resisting police, and causing criminal damage.

Bail was refused, and he was remanded in custody until next month.

The court was told he has 100 previous convictions.

Defence solicitor Dermot Downey said the defendant's mother has not made a statement of complaint against her son, and told police she sustained her injuries after falling in her home.
