Derry City Council backs superstore plans

Councillors in Londonderry have backed plans for the redevelopment of the Northside shopping centre in Shantallow.

The MDM Property Partnership has submitted the plans for a food superstore, five retail units, a medical centre and an underground car-park.

However, some independent traders at the centre said they have been "left in the dark" as to what will become of their businesses once work gets under way.

Sinn Féin Councillor Tony Hasson said business owners based at the centre were worried what the redevelopment would mean for them.

"I'm hoping to meet MDM Property Partnership in the next fortnight as some people have come to me with concerns," he said.

"As far as I'm led to believe, provisions will be made in the form of temporary accommodation."

But SDLP councillor Jimmy Carr said he hoped the redevelopment would bring jobs to the area.

"More jobs provide us with a better service. Creating work for the area is a great thing."
