Planning application submitted for Omagh crematorium

A new one million pound crematorium has been proposed for Omagh.

If the plans go ahead, the crematorium will be the only one of its kind in Northern Ireland outside Belfast.

Omagh District Council is seeking outline planning permission for the scheme.

The architect for the project, Richard Collins, said the plans include the crematorium and a Chapel of Rest.

"There is a need for this sort of facility in the west.

"At the moment if you are, for instance, going from Omagh to Belfast, the journey can take as much as two hours."

Mr Collins said the project is still at the early stages of planning.

"Omagh's location and catchment area has sparked an interested in the private sector.

"The site is in the cemetery grounds, so in terms of usage of land, it would be in-keeping with the cemetery.

"We will have to see how the public will gauge it.

"We would like to think that because it is such a positive project for the town, that the planning system, along with public consultation, should see a positive outcome."
