Derry robber caught by members of the public

A 43 year old man has been jailed at Londonderry Crown Court after pleading guilty to stealing a cash till and possessing an imitation firearm.

John Corrigan from Dunluce Court in Ballymagroarty was caught by members of the public as he ran off with the till from Ballymac Stores.

He was recognised by one of the shop assistants even though he was wearing a balaclava.

The incident happened in July 2010.

Judge Grant praised the members of the public who subdued Corrigan and brought him back to the shop where he was arrested by the police.

The judge said his actions were motivated by his debt of £3500.

Corrigan will spend 2 and a half years in prison and 2 and a half years on licence.
