Pipe bomb discovered in Londonderry 'viable' device

The police said a pipe bomb discovered in Londonderry on Wednesday was a viable device.

A member of the public found the device in a green area close to McGill Court just after 16:00 GMT

The army was called to the scene and the object was taken away for forensic examination.

Chief Inspector Garry Eaton said leaving the device in an area where it could have been picked up by a child was "reckless".

Meanwhile Sinn Fein councillor Mickey Cooper said the device could have seriously injured someone.

"There would have been many people in that area at the time so reckless is an understatement," he said.

"Our message to those behind this is that they have no support and the only thing that has been acheived is disruption to the local community."
