Homes evacuated in Strabane security alert

A number of homes in Strabane have been evacuated because of a security alert.

The police said the Ballycolman Avenue/Melvin View area of the town has been cordoned off, and army bomb disposal officers are at the scene.

A community centre in Ballycolman has been made available for anyone who has had to leave their home.

Sinn Fein councillor Jay McCauley said a device was left outside a local shop, and was noticed by the shop owner at about 10:00 GMT.

He said about 30 to 40 people have left their homes, but the majority had gone to relatives.
