Elderly fisherman dies in Donegal drowning accident
An elderly fisherman's died after falling from a pier near Clonmany in Donegal.
He lost his footing on a ladder while boarding a boat.
He's been named locally as John 'Ned' Kearney. Gardai are treating his death as a tragic accident.
Among the first people to pay tribute to Mr Kearney was Derry priest Fr Michael Canny who was a former neighbour of his in Clonmany.
"Our thoughts are with his wife and family," he said
"He is a very well known man around here. All the fishermen in the Inishowen peninsula and perhaps even the greater Donegal area would know him.
"Even though Monday was a horrible day, he was always the kind of person if he wasn't fishing he would be looking at a boat, or painting a boat, or cleaning a boat or looking out a boat.
"He was a very likable, friendly, kindly man and fishing was his whole life."
