A Derry shop lifter has been jailed for six months

A shoplifter has been jailed for six months at Londonderry Magistrates Court.

David McCloskey, 22, from Nicholson Square admitted stealing almost £500 of goods from a Tesco store at Strand Road in the city.

He also admitted causing criminal damage to the store's staff room by smashing tables and chairs after he was detained by security staff.

In a struggle with police he sustained a cut lip and spat blood at them.

Police officers had to put a mask over his face.

McCloskey committed the offences in September.

Two months previously he stole two mobile phones and a charger from two phone shops.
