A 27-year-old man has appeared at Londonderry Magistrates' Court charged with firearms and explosives offences.

Ryan O'Reilly, from Meadowbank Court in Derry, was arrested at his home in the Strand Road area of the city on Saturday morning.

He denies committing the nine offences at a city centre flat in Hawkin Street on or before 20 December 2012.

The defendant was remanded in custody for a video link hearing before the same court on 21 November.

Mr O'Reilly is charged with possessing in suspicious circumstances a Baikal pistol with a sound suppressor, a Jennings pistol with two ammunition magazines, an improvised 9mm sub-machine gun, an M75 and M52 P3 hand grenade and a stun gun.

He is also charged with possessing in suspicious circumstances a canister of CS spray, 9mm ammunition for use in a Glock 17 pistol and for use in a self-loading Beretta 92 pistol.

In answer to six of the charges the defendant replied: "I strongly deny that".

In answer to two of the charges he replied "no" and in answer to the charge of possessing the Baikal pistol he said: "That was in my possession a few years ago. I have nothing else to do with it nor did I bring any firearms or explosives into Derry.

"I strongly deny importation of drugs."

A defence solicitor did not make a bail application and the defendant was remanded in custody.
