Pharmacist attacked with pepper spray in Strabane

A pharmacist has been attacked with pepper spray by a masked man during an attempted robbery in Strabane.

He was taken to hospital after he was attacked at the shop on Beechmount Avenue at about 17:35 GMT on Saturday.

A police spokesman said it was not known at this stage if anything was stolen. Detectives have appealed for information.

Sinn Féin councillor Brian McMahon said staff had been "subjected to a horrific ordeal".

"The pharmacy also includes a post office and a shop that caters for a huge area. It is a community hub, and you want to feel that staff and customers are safe," he added.

SDLP councillor Patsy Kelly said: "This is not just an attack on a local facility, but it is also an attack on the Strabane community, and I would urge anyone with information to contact police immediately."
