Spencer Road robbery accused had been released from mental hospital

A man arrested on Monday after incidents on Londonderry's Spencer Road had been released earlier from a mental hospital, a court has heard.

Eamon Rory McTaggart, 23, from Gortfoyle Place is charged with robbing a woman of her handbag, possessing a knife and assaulting two men.

He is also accused of possessing a class B drug.

There was no bail application and the defendant was remanded in custody until 2 October.

His solicitor told district judge Barney McElholm that the defendant suffered from mental health issues and had been released from Grangewood hospital on Monday.

Mr McElholm said he was sure the prison authorities would note the solicitor's concerns and he said the defendant should be medically assessed as soon as he arrived at prison.
