A 24-year-old Londonderry man has been in court after he allegedly held a saw blade to a woman's throat on Saturday night.

Seamus Patrick McCallion, from Ederowen Park in Galliagh, appeared at Londonderry Magistrates Court on Monday.

He is charged with assaulting the woman and a man who managed to disarm him.

He is also charged with possessing the weapon and a firework.

'Disturbing case'

A police officer told the district judge that the nine-inch diameter saw blade had been bolted unto a 3ft long pole.

After his arrest on Saturday evening, the defendant said that he had seen a similar weapon being constructed on a video game.

The officer said the police were told that the defendant was "wandering around" Ederowen Park with the weapon.

The judge said it was a deeply disturbing case. He said a considerable amount of work went into making the weapon.

Mr McElholm said he wanted the defendant to be psychiatrically and psychologically assessed and that it seemed he did not know the difference between reality and video games.

The bail application was adjourned until 13 October and the defendant was remanded in custody until then.
