Police investigating the death of a student nurse in Londonderry say they are keeping an open mind as to how she died.

The 19-year-old woman died in hospital after being found unconscious at the foot of stairs at a flat in Cromore Gardens at about 02:30 BST.

A post-mortem will be held on Friday. A 21-year-old man has been arrested.

Detectives have appealed for help in tracing the County Down teenager's movements before 02:00 BST.

'Tragic'

Det Ch Insp Michael Harvey said: "We know that she was in a nightclub in the city centre with friends.

"We believe she left the nightclub in a taxi at about 1am.

"We are keeping an open mind as to the circumstances of this tragic death."

Sinn Féin councillor Kevin Campbell said the community was shocked.

"It is a quiet neighbourhood and something of this nature just doesn't land on their doorstep," he added.

"It is absolutely devastating and it is a tragedy for the local community."

Christopher Simpson owns the flat where the woman was found.

"I am still shaking like a leaf. It is really hard to believe and it is sad.

"It is her parents I feel sorry for. Her life hadn't really started."
