Two men have escaped injury after a suspected arson attack in Limavady, County Londonderry.

The fire service was alerted to the fire at Alexander Road at about 03:40 BST.

It is understood one man managed to get out of a ground floor flat after a smoke alarm went off.

A second man was helped to safety by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus.

Sinn Féin's Brenda Chivers, a councillor for the area, said: "I understand that a few bins were placed at the door of a flat at Alexander park which caused substantial damage.

"I totally condemn any attack on people or property and thank God no one was hurt or killed."

The fire service said that early indications suggest the fire was started deliberately outside the flats.
