Local elections for council seats in England and Wales

15 April 2013 Last updated at 14:26 BST

Millions of voters will get the chance to take part in local elections in some English councils, one Welsh authority and two mayoral elections on 2 May.

John Curtice, professor of politics at the University of Strathclyde, explains what the major parties could - and should - be looking to win and lose on the day.

He joined Jo Coburn to look back to when these same seats were last fought in 2009 and 2005.
