MPs give green light to EU referendum bill

MPs have unanimously approved a bill paving the way for a referendum on Britain's membership of the European Union in four years' time.

The backbench measure still faces further parliamentary hurdles, and there is no guarantee it will become law with most Labour and Liberal Democrat MPs abstaining.
