Chief of Defence can not offer clemency to marine

10 November 2013 Last updated at 11:15 GMT

The Chief of Defence Staff has said he can not join calls for clemency towards the Royal Marine convicted last week of murdering a Taleban prisoner in Afghanistan.

Speaking on The Andrew Marr Show, General Sir Nicholas Houghton said members of the armed forces were not "above the law" and the sentencing should be left entirely to judicial process.
