Cardinal Nichols: Deprived Britain 'not a fantasy'

2 March 2014 Last updated at 10:06 GMT

The head of the Catholic Church in England has refuted claims by MPs that his criticisms of Britain's welfare reforms are "naive".

Cardinal Vincent Nichols said there was evidence that many people in the UK were "living in destitution" and although the government's new policy was "not wrong" it did have "clear implications".

He told the Andrew Marr Show: "Since I made those remarks 10 days ago, different voices have joined in and said that's right."
