'Violent attack' was murder bid
A 36-year-old man is in a "life-threatening" condition in hospital following a "violent attack" in Dumbarton, police have said.
Officers said the man was attacked outside The Waterside Inn, in Riverside Lane, just after midnight.
The assault is being treated as attempted murder by police, who are carrying out inquiries and checking CCTV footage in the area.
Police appealed for witnesses to contact them.
They said they were keen to trace and speak to a man who was seen in the area at the time.
He was described as white, mid to late 20s, medium build, 5ft 11in, with short dark hair and was wearing a white short-sleeved shirt.
Det Insp Mark Stewart said: "This was a particularly violent attack which has resulted in serious injuries to the victim.
"We are currently reviewing CCTV images however I would appeal to any customers within the Waterside Inn, pedestrians or motorists who were in the area of The Waterside Inn around midnight and may have witnessed the assault to get in touch with us.
"I would also appeal to a group of males and females seen near to the incident and who walked off in the direction of the Clipper Bar in the town centre to contact us urgently as they may have information which could help trace those responsible."
