Ship with salt for Scottish roads impounded in Spain

A ship carrying 5,000 tonnes of salt destined for use on Scotland's roads this winter has been impounded in Spain.

The Liberian registered MarieElise was detained in Torrevieja harbour near Alicante after inspectors raised concerns about its sea-worthiness.

Its owners have been ordered to pay a fine of about £50,000.

Scotland used up more than 400,000 tonnes of salt during the first three months of winter last year.
