Councillors' pay to remain frozen next year

Councillors' pay will be frozen again next year, the local government minister has confirmed.

A major review earlier this year suggested significant changes to councillors' pay, but Derek Mackay said any rise would put extra pressure on councils' tight budgets.

Councillors would have seen their basic pay rise from £16,000 to £18,000 a year.

Mr Mackay said he would look again at the recommendations next year.

While some councillors agreed with the arguments for improving their pay, they were also aware of the potential consequences of doing this while budgets are tight, jobs are being cut and many staff are having their pay frozen.
