Ferneyhill Cemetery in Kelso floods after theft

A Borders cemetery has been flooded after thieves stole tap heads from two standpipes.

It is believed that the taps were taken on Wednesday night at Ferneyhill Cemetery in Kelso.

However, the flooding was only noticed when a council employee drove past the site on Thursday afternoon.

Police said a great deal of damage had been caused to the cemetery, which only opened last month and contains a solitary grave.

The pathways and landscaped areas were left lying under a foot of water, and it is expected that the clean-up operation will continue into next week.

Police have not ruled out the possibility that the two brass taps were stolen for scrap.
