SPFL tackles fans' weight problem

21 January 2014 Last updated at 15:51 GMT

New research published in The Lancet has found that a scheme which enlisted football clubs to help middle-aged men get fit was more effective than dietary advice alone.

The Football Fans In Training initiative offered men a free 12-week healthy eating and fitness course at their favourite football club.

Researchers monitored around 700 men, half of whom completed the programme and half who were given an advice booklet.

The fans who took part lost nine times as much weight. The scheme has been rolled out to 16 professional football clubs in Scotland.

BBC Scotland's health correspondent Eleanor Bradford reports.
