A man has been charged under the Explosives Substances Act after a tower block in Edinburgh was evacuated.

Fidra Court, in the Muirhouse area of the city, was cordoned off by officers from Police Scotland at about 21:00 on Friday after a number of suspicious packages were reported.

Bomb disposal experts were called to the scene.

Police said a 61-year-old man had been charged and was expected to appear in court later.

Residents who were evacuated were allowed back into their homes just before 03:00 on Saturday.

Ch Insp Sara Buchanan, of Police Scotland, said: "We are still in the early stages of our inquiry and I'd like to thank the public for their patience, particularly those who were evacuated at Fidra Court, while we worked to establish the circumstances of this incident."
