Two rescued from blaze at flats in Leith

A man and a woman have been rescued after a blaze broke out in the common stairwell at a block of flats.

The fire broke out at about 05:00 at the building in Albert Street in the Leith area of Edinburgh.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said the man and women were rescued by firefighters from two flats in the stairwell.

He said: "They were treated on the scene by ambulance crews as they were suffering smoke inhalation."

The fire service used breathing equipment and two high-pressure hosereels to put out the ground-floor blaze.
