A historic hotel in the centre of Linlithgow has been evacuated after fire engulfed the building.

It is understood the blaze started in a first-floor linen cupboard at about 0700 BST before spreading to the second floor and roof of the Star and Garter.

More than 55 firefighters from Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service are at the scene in the town's High Street. There are no reports of injuries

The area around the 18th Century building has been cordoned off.

A spokesman for the brigade said five guests who were staying at the hotel had been led to safety.

He added: "Lothian and Borders are dealing with a developing fire in a well-established hotel in Linlithgow High Street.

"We have no reports of any injuries."
