Letterbox fire in Edinburgh 'may have been deliberate'

A fire which began in the letterbox of an Edinburgh family's home on Wednesday night is being treating as suspected wilful fireraising.

A man, woman and a young boy were rescued from the flat in Pilton Avenue after the fire broke out at 2040 GMT.

Firefighters stayed with the occupants until the smoke had thinned and they were able to go downstairs and get outside.

They were treated at the scene for minor smoke inhalation.

An investigation into the cause of the blaze is under way.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "Thankfully neighbours were able to extinguish the fire before it spread any further, and the occupants managed to escape from the property unharmed.

"Nevertheless this was an extremely serious incident, and inquiries are under way to trace whoever is responsible.

"We are appealing for anyone who was in the area of Pilton Avenue at the time, who noticed anyone acting suspiciously there, to contact police as a matter of urgency.

"Anyone else who has any information that can assist should also get in touch."
