A woman who leapt from the window of a burning house in Edinburgh has died.

The 35-year-old, who had serious burns, jumped from the blaze just before 0245 GMT in Fernieside Avenue and was taken to hospital where she later died.

A 40-year-old man, who was rescued by neighbours, is in a serious condition in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

At least 30 firefighters were called to tackle the fire on the first floor of the mid-terrace home. A fire investigation is now under way.

A Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "This was a severe fire with extremely hot conditions for firefighters.

"The fire service evacuated surrounding properties and checked for fire spread and to ensure no-one else was inside the property.

"Residents are expected to be allowed to return to their homes later."

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "We are currently working alongside colleagues at the fire service to determine the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.

"Anyone with information that can assist with our enquiries is asked to contact police immediately."
