Woman and elderly man rescued from Bathgate fire

A woman and an elderly man have been rescued from the first floor of a house in West Lothian after they became trapped by fire.

Firefighters used a ladder to reach the 80-year-old man and 54-year-old woman at Birniehill Terrace, Bathgate, just after 2330 GMT on Monday.

An investigation is under way into what caused the blaze to start at the front door of the property.

The man was treated for the effects of smoke but the woman was uninjured.

The pair were alerted to the flames by a smoke alarm but could not escape.

Control staff at Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said they stayed on the phone and gave them advice until a crew arrived.
